A pleasant getaway in the countryside
Pension Merkež is a cosy little guesthouse built on the site where a farmhouse once stood as part of a larger farm. We are located in the wine-growing region of Bizeljsko, in the peaceful village of Brezovica, in the south-eastern part of Slovenia, close to the Čatež Spa and Olimia Spa.Discover the mysterious world of repnice – cellars dug into the sand that was deposited here long ago by the Pannonian Sea; walk along the marked hiking trails, head into the vineyards on foot or by bike, enjoy tastings in local wine cellars or simply indulge in homemade cuisine.
Relaxing break without television
Feel the spirit of homeliness and authenticity in four rustically furnished rooms and one apartment. Around Pension Merkež there is an orchard, and on the terrace in front of the entrance there is always a table with chairs ready for you. In winter, new friendships are made by the fireplace in the guest room, and in summer outside on the terrace by the garden fire pit.All rooms are named after old grape varieties. They are furnished with handcrafted rustic furniture and colour-coordinated with the grape variety in their name. Each room is air-conditioned and has a comfortable bed, a bathroom with shower, hairdryer, toiletries and slippers. Ana’s apartment, which is suitable for families, is a tribute to the former housekeeper, as the living room is furnished with pieces from her dowry.

Treasures of Bizeljsko
Repnice cellarsLong ago… there was a sea. Blue, full of waves – the Pannonian Sea. It changed over time, each wave leaving behind a new layer of sandy crystals. It existed, and then it disappeared. What remained is a miracle of nature and human hands – the repnice cellars.
Repnice are caves dug into quartz sand that was deposited in the Bizeljsko area millions of years ago by the Pannonian Sea. In the past, repnice were used to store apples, potatoes and turnips – from which they also got their name. Thanks to constant humidity of around 80% and a temperature between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius, they are now ideal wine cellars.
Ajdov kolač – buckwheat cake
This is a culinary speciality of the Bizeljsko region. The dough is made from buckwheat flour and filled with a cottage cheese filling. It is rolled up like a potica and generously coated with sour cream. It is a savoury dessert that tastes best when served hot.
In the past, housewives prepared it for major holidays and during the grape harvest, while today it pairs perfectly with Bizeljsko wines at tastings. You can also try it at our house, where we prepare it for you upon prior reservation.
